Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
