British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
