The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
