The English and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
