Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
